My politics
For a number of years I have been a Member of the Conservative Party and have held the post of Constituency Chairman in the Berwick upon Tweed Conservative Association and have represented the Association at National level. I have also been Branch Chairman for the local Berwick Town Branch
Why I am involved in local politics:
I am involved in local politics to help Ward Members with their problems irrespective of
of the their political viewpoint and to strive to improve the quality of life for residents
and visitors alike in the Borough.
Local issues important to me:
Tourism is very important in rural Northumberland and must be continually encouraged but I do
feel that the proposed plans for wind turbine farms will cause blots on our beautiful landscape.
Encouraging businesses into the Borough to provide employment to enable people to stay in
the Borough rather than move away to seek employment.
I believe in the continuing lobbying for dualling of the A1
To keep fighting to maintain the services of Berwick Infirmary which NHS are continually trying to reduce
Improvements which I wish to bring about in this Council and the services it provides:
To continue to strengthen our Partnerships with local Organisations such as LSP (Local Strategic Partnership) and the Local Development Trusts throughout the Borough, as well as with other local Councils in Northumberland such as Alnwick District Council where we have a Tourism Partnership for the first time this year.
What I would like to achieve as a Councillor:
To see more affordable housing being built throughout the Borough in order for young people to get a foot on the property ladder.
Which committees I serve on, and why:
Policy Environment Committee - currently Chairman - Believe in green issues such as the promoting of recycling throughout the Borough and to this end it is intended that every resident will have a blue kerbside recycling bin by the end of 2007. Also currently promoting 'green waste' recycling bins for garden waste in the Berwick, Tweedmouth, Spittal and Ord areas.
Overview and Scrutiny - In this respect looked at the implication of the Disability Discrimination Act and the possible promotion of Early Evening Economy in Berwick Town Centre
Outside interests/hobbies:
As a Councillor I sit on the following outside bodies: The Voluntary Forum, and The Maltings (Berwick) Trust Board. My hobbies include amateur dramatics, ski-ing and riding.
