Pollution control - air handling units
Ventilation and air-conditioning systems which are poorly installed or maintained may be a health risk to the public. The local authority can provide advice and guidance on all apsects of installation and can require that detailed plans are submitted for inspection prior to installation of new units. This particularly applies to catering establishments.
Air conditioning and ventilation units must be maintained properly in order to avoid problems such as fire risks, odour pollution, diseases such as legionella and the general welfare of those in the area being ventilated. Certain types of catering establishments, e.g. those offering a full menu including cooking and frying, will need specific levels of ventilation and odour control.
Advice on the installation etc of such units is available from the Environmental and Enforcement Unit and the Health and Safety Executive.
The authority may request a certain level of ventilation at the planning stage of a new business.
