Coastal protection
The Borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed has a coastline of approximately 75km stretching from the Scottish border in the north to the Long Nanny Burn located in Beadnell Bay to the south.
The coastline is protected by natural and man-made structures to protect it from the aggressive North Sea environment.
In 1998 a Shoreline Management Plan was developed and adopted by Berwick and neighbouring coastal authorities. This was prepared to help local authorities to better manage and address their shoreline management issues. This document provides an assessment of the risks associated with coastal processes and presents a policy framework to reduce risks to people and the developed, historic and natural environment in a sustainable manner.
The Council has been successful in obtaining grant aid from DEFRA to promote major coastal capital schemes in the Borough, including Spittal Promenade and Beadnell Harbour. Further information from DEFRA.
