Noise
Complaints about excessive noise are investigated by the local authority who can take action if the noise is considered to be a statutory nuisance.
Our noise service investigates complaints about noise from commercial and domestic sources. We provide this service during normal office hours and on a Friday and Saturday night.
We can help or advise you about noise from:
- barking dogs
- building sites
- burglar alarms
- car alarms
- noisy deliveries
- nightclubs
- noisy neighbours
- parties
- pubs
- noisy kitchen extracts and air conditioning units
- roadworks
We have no legal powers to deal with:
- rowdy behaviour in public places
- traffic and aircraft noise
Making a Complaint
Complaints can be made in person, by telephone, by letter or via a third party (such as a Councillor). However, our advice is that in the first instance it is better if the first approach to the owner of the premises is made by you.
Trained receptionists in Environmental Health will take initial details. These details will be passed to an investigating officer, who will contact you later for further information, if necessary.
Written complaints should be addressed to:
Principal Environmental Health Officer
Council Offices
Wallace Green
Berwick-upon-Tweed
TD15 1ED
You will need to include your name and address, together with:
- the type of noise
- its frequency
- the duration of the noise and
- the name and address of the person causing the noise
(Please note that anonymous complaints will not normally be investigated.) We will also ask you if you have taken any action about the noise.
Below you can download diary sheets to record how often the noise occurs and the character of the noise this will help us to establish whether the law relating to noise nuisance has been broken.
