Recycling - Bags:
Provision of a container (bag, green box etc.) for door-to-door collection of household waste for recycling.
Blue recycling bins are supplied currently to households in the Berwick, Tweedmouth, Spittal, Scremerston and Norham areas. If the houshold is one of those listed as a sack collection property (i.e. where there is no storage area for wheeled bins, or where the only access to such a storage area is via the living quarters of the house) blue recycling bags will be provided.
For households in the recycling area bins will be emptied on an alternating week collection. That is, blue recycling one week, black general waste the next. A calendar showing which is the relevant week is available on the website.
There is currently no charge for recycling bins. A domestic wheeled bin application form is available on the web for download or one can be obtained by contacting Council Reception on 01289 330044.

Garden Waste
We currently operate a garden waste collection scheme in Berwick, Tweedmouth, Spittal, Scremerston, East Ord, Norham & Horncliffe. This will be extended in May 2008 to cover Beadnell, Bamburgh, Belford, North Sunderland and Seahouses villages as part of our recycling programme.
The cost for the current year is £15.50 per bin
The garden waste collection service makes it easy for you to recycle your garden waste. and reduce the amount of garden waste that is currently being sent to landfill, where it produces greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming.
Over 365 households took part in 2007 with 118 tonnes of waste sent for composting, rather than going to a landfill site.
WHAT WILL WE COLLECT?
- Grass cuttings
- Small shrubs and tree prunings
- Flowers and similar plants
- Weeds
- Hedge clippings
- Leaves and bark
- Small branches
NO
- kitchen or food waste
- turf, soil stones, flower pots or seed trays
- nappies/pet fouling/cat litter
- any plastics or bags
- general household waste
these items will contaminate the load and make it unsuitable for collection and composting
If you would like to take part in the garden waste scheme or have any questions or problems regarding any of our waste collection services, or recycling issues then telephone us on 01289 301734 or 301825.
