Neighbour Nuisance and Anti-social behaviour

What is neighbour nuisance?

Neighbour nuisance or anti social behaviour is anything which interferes with the peaceful enjoyment of the home and surrounding area.

Examples of anti social behaviour include noise nuisance, verbal and physical abuse, harassment, vandalism, storing and dealing of drugs etc.

Tenants' responsibilities

For Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council tenants, your Tenancy Agreement advises you of your responsibility as a Council Tenant not to cause a nuisance to others, or use the property for illegal or immoral purposes.  Remember you are also responsible for the behaviour of anyone living with you (including children) and visitors to your home.

Resolving problems

If you are having problems with your neighbours who are Council tenants please contact Paul Charlwood or Billy Wilson, Housing Officers. They will discuss the complaint with you and make an appointment to see you if necessary. You can also call into the housing office on Wallace Green – Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Mediation service

We also offer a Mediation Service which may also help if you have a problem with neighbours which you can't sort out - whether it's about pets, kids, rubbish or noise.

The service aims to help anyone who is in conflict with his or her neighbour and is there to:

  • Help people in the community resolve their problems in positive and constructive ways.
  • Make realistic agreements with their neighbours about how they want to live together safely and amicably in the future.
  • Encourage early resolution of neighbour disputes before they escalate into other forms of anti-social behaviour or harassment .

If you would like to discuss mediation please contact Simon Lord, Principal Housing Officer.
