Housing - home insurance
Local authorities manage and maintain tenants homes but do not insure tenants personal belongings, household goods and contents. However, they offer comprehensive insurance cover for contents which is exclusively available to its tenants. Tenants are advised to take out home contents insurance.

Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council tenants have the option to insure the contents of their homes in an easy and affordable way.
The scheme has been developed in conjunction with Royal and Sun Alliance to give tenants the benefit of joining a value for money insurance scheme at competitive rates.
- Any application forms relating to the service
Full details of the policy cover, including all conditions and exclusions, can be obtained by asking the Housing Unit to supply you with a booklet outlining the scheme. You will then be able to ensure that the policy would meet your requirements.
- Cost or scale of charges for the service
Premiums are payable weekly or monthly with your rent.
Examples of cover include weekly payments from £0.95p to insure contents to the value of 39,000. Tenants aged over 60 can get cover from £0.63p per week for £6,000 worth of cover.
