Housing repairs - overdue repairs - discretionary allowance
The local authority may make a discretionary allowance to tenants where it has not been possible to carry out essential repairs to their home or to communal areas around their home within a reasonable or agreed timeframe.
The Council’s policy for providing compensation is set out in our ‘Repairs Policy’ and the Housing Act – called ‘Tenant’s Right to Repair’. A printed copy of the policy is also available from the Council Offices in Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Under our policy, we have set out various guarantees or timescales for carrying out certain repairs, including emergencies and urgent ones. Not all repairs that the Council is responsible for are covered under the ‘Right to Repair’, especially routine ones such as replacing catches on gates.
For further information on how to apply for any compensation, please contact the Property & Housing Unit, telephone 01289 301830 or 01289 301812.
