Home improvements - disability facility grant for a private property
The disabled facilities grant scheme provides financial assistance towards the cost of essential adaptation work to make a house fit for a disabled person.
This service is provided to deal with referrals and recommendations from occupational therapists / health care professionals for adaptations to assist disabled residents living in private accommodation.
Examples of the types of adaptations, which can be provided, are level access showers, ramps, stair lifts, through-floor vertical lifts, door entry systems, extensions to provide ground floor sleeping and washing facilities
When owner-occupiers or private tenants feel they need help with their care they contact Northumberland County Council Care Trust for an assessment of their needs. This is carried out by an occupational therapist who will pass on their recommendations to the council. The occupational therapist will also arrange for contractors to estimate for the work required.
- All requests for adaptations must be referrals from Northumberland Care Trust
- This work is funded through a Disabled Facilities Grant.
Disabled Facility Grants are subject to a Test of Resources i.e a ‘means test’ which in the first instance is conducted informally.
All information is treated in the strictest of confidence.
Details of Disability Facilities Grants can be found in Berwick –upon-Tweed Borough Councils Private Sector Housing Renewal Policy.
