Renovation grants
Home renovation grants may be available to owner-occupiers and landlords of accommodation which is deemed "unfit to live in", is in a bad state of repair, shows evidence of extensive dampness, lacks basic amenities such as bathroom or toilet facilities and where the applicant is unable to pay for essential repairs.
These grants may be provided to help owners of properties in a poor condition carry out repairs to bring their homes up to a recognised fitness standard.
Examples of the types of work, which can be included within a renovation grant are replacement roof coverings, installation of damp proof courses, rewiring, replacement of services, structural repairs , as well as other items of general disrepair.
Priority is given to properties, which are in Council Tax Band A or B.
Approvals for grant assistance are processed according to the level of unfitness.
Renovation Grants are subject to a Test of Resources i.e. a ‘means test’ which in the first instance is conducted informally. All information is treated in the strictest of confidence.
Details of Renovation Grants can be found in Berwick –upon-Tweed Borough Councils Private Sector Housing Renewal Policy.
