The Borough Council makes an annual partnership contribution to the work of Sport England as part of its commitment to encouraging sports activity within the Borough. Council budget reductions necessitated in January meant the contribution for the year 2007-08 amounting to some £7,000, was suspended. Following the improvement in Council finances the Committee’s approval is sought for a supplementary funding of £7,000 to enable 2007-08’s commitment to be honoured.

Report
3.1
In common with other councils Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council has for some years made an annual contribution to Sport England as part of its commitment to encouraging sports activity within the Borough. In return the Borough Council has enjoyed the support and services of Sport England within the Borough; most recently Sport England has generously made a commitment of over £85,760 over three years to fund the new Borough Sports Development Worker and Co-ordinator, who came into post on 20th August 2007.
3.2
Sport England has also made a strong commitment in principle to much more future support in Berwick Borough to encourage more local people to take up physical activities and promote sports and recreation activities, once the Sports Development Worker has identified a development programme for the next three years.
The annual contribution for the year 2007-08 amounting to some £7,000, was suspended in the budget exercise at the beginning of 2007 in the light of severe financial constraints at that time. With the improvement in the Council’s financial position, the Committee’s approval is sought for supplementary budget to enable this annual commitment to be honoured.
