Aims/Objectives/Activities

Aim – The aim of the Berwick Borough Family Centre Project is to support families/individuals to achieve their optimum health, social and educational potential. This will be addressed through a working partnership made up from members of the local community, public, private, statutory and voluntary organisations.

Objectives – The Committee seeks :

  • To improve the health of the residents (of Berwick upon Tweed) by delivering, a wide and holistic range of health initiatives, which will assist in meeting national and local health targets. The project will specifically address health inequalities and issues of health improvement, within a model of services, which also tackles social and economic determinants of poor health.

 

  • To encourage community capacity building through adopting a community involvement approach in service delivery, facilitating local ownership of the project through working in partnership with other key agencies thereby empowering communities to effect positive change in their lives thereby contributing to health and social improvement

 

  • To develop, implement, and deliver services and continue to consult with stakeholders within identified isolated rural communities, therefore identifying gaps in provision. To deliver structured programme` which improve access for groups and individuals within these isolated communities.

 

  • To develop and improve local employment and training opportunities for young people and their families by encouraging the take up of both vocational and non-vocational courses and work placements. To provide encouragement and support for individuals to make appropriate use of mental health and other services in order to fully develop their potential

 

  • To develop responsible and active citizenship by providing personal development and a capacity building programme for an extended age range of young people.

Aim – The principal aim of the Berwick Parish Church Trust is to assist the Parochial Church Council in the preservation and repair of the church and its fittings.

Objectives – In the 15 years since its formation it has assisted the PCC in carrying out major works by raising funds locally, nationally and internationally and it is embarking on a further fund-raising initiative to help with the continuing programme of repairs and refurbishment of this building of exceptional historic and architectural interest.

Aim – The School brings together people from a wide variety of backgrounds to have the time to learn from each other about themselves and about their place in society. There is constant stimulation to enable students and staff to broaden their horizons and to ask fundamental questions about the purpose of their existence and the way the world is going. There is mutual respect between staff and students and many of the day to day decisions in the school are influenced by the opinions of the students. Each student is helped to see that they have a unique contribution to make to the life of the immediate community and therefore also to the wider community.

Objectives – There are three kinds of learning:

  • Shared subjects which all are expected to study together. These include literature, culture and history, international understanding, Celtic spirituality and film studies.
  • Main subjects which provide the principal focus of the school. These include care for the environment, rural studies, marine biology and healthy eating.
  • Special subjects which students may choose. For example fishing, boat building, sailing, woodwork, textiles, pottery, organic growing, bee-keeping, ornithology, botany, country dancing, contemporary music, poetry, creative writing, painting, calligraphy, meditation, making videos, a second language, tourism and use of IT.

  • CCN provides a range of advice and support services for community and voluntary groups to enable people throughout Northumberland to overcome disadvantages and improve their quality of life.  The Community Council is concerned that everyone should know what their rights are, where to get the help they need or how to organise and provide their own local facilities.
  • The Community Council believes that community groups can influence their own future by seeking help from the appropriate authorities or by setting up and managing self-help initiatives.  Either new or established groups may need information, advice and support and the Community Council of Northumberland exists to provide these.

Aim Connexions is a new approach for young people aged 13-19 years, to help them make decisions about their future, including study, jobs and careers. Connexions Northumberland brings together all the local services providing help for young people. It aims to help them get the opportunities they need to fulfill their potential and become an active citizen of tomorrow.

Objectives

Every young person will have access to a Connexions Personal Adviser, who will help them to achieve their ambitions. The Personal Adviser can give advice on career choices, health matters, lifestyle, learning opportunities, and can help with finding a job. They will also be able to help with specific problems.

Aim – The North Northumberland Drug Reference Group comprises key partners from organisations with an interest in the substance misuse field within North Northumberland including each of the organisations represented on the Drug Action Team and the Community Safety Strategy Groups. It is accountable to the Northumberland Drug Action Team, and meets bi-monthly to consider the objectives as set out.

Objectives – The Group seeks to :

  • A ssess the nature and scale of local drug misuse problems and advise the Drug Action Team on the appropriate measures to be taken to tackle them effectively. This will include developing a strategic overview including sharing of organisational strategies and mapping of current service activity.
  • Provide a local forum to exchange information about good practice and new initiatives and acting as an advisory body to organisations as required.
  • Facilitate and co-ordinate inter-agency work to ensure local implementation of National Objectives including joint planning of services purchased to respond to substance misuse in North Northumberland.
  • Raise the public awareness and involving the local community in action to make progress against all these strands of the Statement of Purpose. This will include forming and maintaining links with the Community Safety Strategies and Community Plans in North Northumberland and by providing advice and support as appropriate.
  • Encourage, develop and monitor bids for additional funding for substance misuse work in North Northumberland
  • Having a remit encompassing a comprehensive range of substances including alcohol, volatile substances, OTC drugs, illegal drugs and prescribed drugs.

Aim – The Glendale Gateway Trust is a local development Trust which was set up in 1996 to promote, improve, maintain, encourage and advance the benefit of the inhabitants of Glendale. The Trust is a community lead body and is represented by local volunteers as well as retailers, local councillors and local organisations.

Activities

On the ground the Trust has been active in implementing recommendations from the Wooler Village appraisal and community initiatives including: The Cheviot Centre which opened in November 2000. This is an all-encompassing community facility. The project brings together community activities and services to improve access and sustainability.

Aim

In 1996, the Lindisfarne Community Development Trust was created to initially provide affordable rented accommodation for young people who wanted to live and work on the island. The Trust has grown and widened its aims and now seeks to improve the general infrastructure of Holy Island for residents and visitors alike.

Activities

  • the Trust has opened a community resources and information centre in the village on Marygate called the Lindisfarne Heritage Centre
  • Working closely with the Management Committee and through two wider community workshops, an action plan has been prepared. A common "Vision" for the island's future was generated and the main objectives agreed. The HILCDT will drive this action plan in partnership with the local and national agencies who have an interest in the future of the island.
  • The Lindisfarne Gospels Garden project aims to interpret heritage research to make a garden about the Lindisfarne Gospels, on land opposite the Heritage Centre. This holds copies of the Gospels and has received funds previously from the Heritage Lottery Fund. An archaeological survey will research the site before work commences. Local volunteers will receive expert training to make the garden themselves, while leaflets, launch and a web site will raise awareness further.
