Licence - hackney carriage driver's licences
A licence is required before any person can drive a hackney carriage (taxi). To be granted a licence, the applicant must have held a full driving licence for at least 12 months and must be a “fit and proper person” – that is to say regard shall be taken of the applicant’s driving record, driving experience, sobriety, mental and physical fitness (a GP’s medical certificate is required), honesty and whether they would not take advantage of their employment to abuse or assault passenger (an enhanced Criminal Record Bureau check is required).
If you wish to drive a hackney carriage (taxi) you must first obtain the necessary licence. You will need to complete an application form; have a medical examination by your General Practitioner who completes the medical certificate form; and complete a criminal record bureau (CRB) disclosure application form and produce documentary proof of your identity. An application form is available below and a CRB form may be sent to you by post. However, it will be necessary to visit our offices in order to complete the application process.
