Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council has a new Sports Development Officer.

Paul Jones joined the Council in August and is exited about his new role promoting and developing sport provision in the Borough. The post is being 100% funded in the first year by Sport England, 75% funded in year two and 50% funded in year three.

“Over the next few months my specific role will be setting up the Berwick Sports and Physical Activity Alliance. This group will work with the sports and physical activity community to ensure that activities on offer meet the needs of the local people. We’ll also be working with Northumberland Sport, Sport England and other key partners to develop the Alliance.

“I’ll be working throughout the area helping to create opportunities for people to participate, coach, and volunteer and generally be involved in sport and physical activity. My role isn’t to actually run events or put my tracksuit on and coach local clubs but I’ll be facilitating local clubs and volunteers to do this.

“I’ll also be working with clubs to help them develop and gain Sport England’s Club Accreditation, help new clubs set up and volunteers to access the training they require; whilst providing any support I can to help develop sport and physical activity in the Borough,” Paul said.

If you are a local club or would like to set one up, please give Paul a call on 01289 301774 or e-mail paj@berwick-upon-tweed.gov.uk
