Recycling gets better and better

Following the roll-out of the blue recycling bins to rural households across the Borough the amount of waste which is being recycled had gone up significantly.

By the end of 2006/07 the Borough had recycled 22.03% of the household waste - the previous year only 15.54% was recycled.

Head of Public Protection Jan Anderson said:
“We are continuing to find ways of improving the service. You may have noticed that our contractors, Veolia, are now operating a new system for collecting recyclable material. For greater efficiency they can now use any vehicle but we still ensure that each type of material, green glass, white glass, cans and paper are kept separate for delivery to the processors for recycling.

“None of the waste collected, despite some recent reports in the press, is being sent to China for processing.

“The bring sites are also heavily used for glass recycling and we need whenever possible to improve these sites and keep the areas clean and tidy.

“If you see a problem, or have any ideas on improvements that could be made, please let us know by calling 01289 330044 or e-mailing enquiries@berwick-upon-tweed.gov.uk ,” she said.
