Remembrance Day events take place on Sunday, 11 November 2007

Following the decision by local church leaders to further strengthen the ecumenical tradition of sharing important services by agreeing to alternate the traditional Remembrance Day Service between the Parish Church and St Andrew’s Church of Scotland in Berwick, it has been confirmed that this year’s Service, will be held on Sunday, 11 November 2007 at the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity and St Mary, Berwick-upon-Tweed.
The Civic Service of Remembrance will begin at 9.45am. The service in the Parish Church and will be conducted by the Reverend Alan Hughes and Reverend Paul Sewell.
At the close of the Service, the Civic Party, clergy, Service units, Royal British Legion and other organisations will proceed to the War Memorial in Castlegate for the Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance, which is scheduled to begin at 10.55am.
The Reverend Hughes will conduct the Act of Remembrance, assisted by the Reverend Sewell. An Honour Guard formed by representatives of 1016 (Berwick) Squadron, Air Training Corps and 100 Pioneer Squadron, Royal Logistics Corps will take its place at the four corners of the Memorial, with musical accompaniment being once again provided by The Berwick Concert Band, organised by Mr Edward Chester, for the short service, during which local organisations will lay wreaths at the Memorial. Seating will be provided at the War Memorial for veterans taking part in the Service.
Traffic will be halted at both ends of Castlegate for the duration of the Service.
After the Service, the Mayor will take the Salute of the Parade on the steps of the Town Hall before attending War Memorial Services at 12 noon at Tweedmouth and 12.45pm at Spittal. Members of the Council will represent the Mayor at other Memorials within the Borough.
The Civic Party will attend a 6pm Evening Service at St Andrew’s Wallace Green and Lowick Church of Scotland, Berwick-upon-Tweed, the Mayor laying a wreath at the altar during the Service on behalf of the Borough, as part of the formal Act of Remembrance.
As in previous years, the Council will make arrangements for the firing of Maroons from sites at Meg’s Mount in Berwick and the War Memorials in Wooler and in Seahouses to mark the start of the end of the Two Minutes’ Silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month on Armistice Day (11am on Sunday, 11 November 2007).
Parish Councils and Local Schools have been asked to consider taking the opportunity of sharing a moment of reflection at an appropriate time.
