Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council has carried out a snap shot survey to gauge local opinion on the impact of the smoking ban which came into force on 1 July.
76% of people asked thought that the smoking ban was a good thing and 90% of smokers asked either thought that the ban was good or were neutral towards it.
Smokefree Officer Wendy Pattison said:
“The majority of people asked thought that the smoking ban was a good thing and that it made a positive impact on their lives. Although clearly the biggest effect has been greatest on smokers who told us that they feel shunned and don’t enjoy evenings out.
“Some interesting issues have also come up since the ban including people find it intimidating walking into pubs and clubs because people are standing smoking in the entrance. The mess caused by litter and cigarette ends on the floor is also causing concern and we’ll be talking to owners about that.
“Overall though, people think that the smoking ban is a good thing. Parents feel that they can take their children out without the fear of smokers around them and that it is much better for Asthma sufferers,” she said.
