Berwick-upon-Tweed learner Scoops North East Regional Award

Debra Paget from Berwick-upon-Tweed is celebrating success today after winning an award at the learndirect North East Regional Achievement Awards ceremony.

Debra Paget won the North East Region Learning Through Work Award, sponsored by Skills North East, which recognises individuals who have developed their business skills using the learndirect Learning Through Work programme. Debra was nominated for the award by a senior lecturer at Northumbria University, David McGuinness.

After leaving school at 15 without any formal qualifications, Debra decided she wanted to continue her education to develop her skills in the work-place. She therefore decided to take a degree course in Public Service Management at Northumbria University. She used the learndirect Learning through Work programme to complete a work-based project, the results of which were used to inform future training within Berwick Upon Tweed Borough council, where she works as a PA. She is expected to achieve a high grade when she finishes her degree - a great achievement alongside a full-time occupation.

On receiving her award Debra commented:

“Being a winner is overwhelming, the icing on the cake. I’m doing my final dissertation at the moment and will know the result in the winter. So it will be a long, hard summer ahead. Being nominated by the tutors is the proof of their belief in you.”

Debra will now go on to represent the North East at the National Awards Ceremony, which will take place at The Science Museum in London on 20 October.

Dereth Wood, Ufi Operations Director said:

“The North East Regional winners have demonstrated an inspirational commitment to developing their skills and qualifications. As a great encouragement to millions of learners across England, Debra truly deserves recognition.”
