Legendary England World Cup winner Jack Charlton OBE visited Tillmouth Park Hotel and the River Tweed on Wednesday, 7 November to support Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council’s campaign to attract more visitors and tourists in 2008.
Jack agreed to feature within the new Berwick Borough Holiday Guide for 2008 which will be officially launched at The Guildhall in Berwick early December.
Having played for Leeds United during their “glory” years, won 35 caps for England and managed Middlesbrough, Newcastle United and the Republic of Ireland, Jack is now keen to promote his home of Northumberland and was especially rich in his praise of Berwick Borough.
“When we have visitors I recommend them to take a tour along the Tweed Valley from Kelso to Berwick, for a walk around the famous Walls and a look round the shops, down to Holy Island and on to Bamburgh Castle, finishing at Seahouses for the best fish and chips in England,” said Jack. “It’s a two day journey but I know they’ll love it!”
To emphasise the Borough as a location for superb river fishing Jack donned his waders and famous cap and posed for Holiday Guide photographs on the south bank of the Tweed at Coldstream.
Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council Head of Regeneration Tim Kirton said:
“Jack is most generous in his praise for our beautiful Borough for its tranquillity, its beauty, its quality accommodation and its superb fishing. We are very grateful to Jack for generously giving his time to support our marketing of the Borough.”
