The last collection for Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council’s garden waste pilot scheme will take place this Saturday, 24 November.

This small scheme has grown dramatically over the last two years with 366 residents taking part this year. The scheme currently operates in the Berwick town area.

The amount of garden waste that has been diverted from landfill and sent for composting has increased from 46.22 tonnes last year to 89.10 tonnes collected in this season up to September when the latest figures were available. It is estimated that following this week’s collection about 100 tonnes of waste may have been collected.

Technical Officer Kathleen McNish said:
“This year much more waste has been collected because so many more people have taken part. Many thanks to those who signed up and we hope that people think it is a worthwhile project.

“We will also be looking at whether it will be possible to extend the scheme to other parts of the Borough and any improvements which could be made,” she said.
