Berwick Border Marches long walk cancelled

Release date: 25.09.08
Ref: BBC/PR/R&D/19/08

The wettest September for many years has resulted in the loss of one of the walks at this year’s Border Marches taking place on Sunday, 28 September.

Organisers stressed the other walks are going ahead as planned.

Tourism Resources Officer Lorna Suthren at Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough Council said:
“The unusually wet weather which resulted in floods across the country and so noticeably at Morpeth, has also unfortunately resulted in a landslip on a footpath near Norham and damage to a footbridge near Horncliffe.

“Unfortunately both are on the route of the Border Marches long walk of 42km (26 miles) so in the interests of public safety we have no alternative but to cancel the long walk but I stress this is the only walk which is cancelled, the others are both completely unaffected.

“People who were going to take part in the long walk are most welcome to join the medium walk of 25km (13 miles) or the short walk of 10km (six miles),” she said.

If you have any questions or would like further information on the two remaining walks please contact Lorna Suthren on 01289 301860 or alternatively Tim Kirton on 01289 301760 or mobile 07931 377705.
