Berwick-upon-Tweed is going to get two new sports officers; a Club Development Officer and a Physical Activity Development Officer.
The North East Regional Sports Board on Tuesday, 25 March approved two funding applications made by Berwick Sport and Physical Activity Alliance totalling £124,669.
The alliance have also found match funding for the projects which means that the total investment in Berwick Borough is £350,000. The funding means that the officers will be working full time for three years.
The posts will be hosted by two local development trusts; Glendale Gateway Trust will host the Club Development Officer and North Sunderland and Seahouses Development Trust the Physical Activity Development Officer.
Sports Development Officer at the Council, Paul Jones said:
“This is a massive investment for Berwick. It will enable us to put together a sports development team which can really make an impact on sport and physical activity across the Borough. These two officers will be working with volunteer groups to increase participation in sport.
“The recruitment process will begin shortly for these officers. This is also just the first phase of longer term plans for sport in Berwick as we’re looking to build the team further in the coming years.
“By continuing to work in partnership with organisations including North Sunderland and Seahouses Development Trust and Glendale Gateway Trust we will ensure the longer term future for sport in Berwick,” he said.
