NORTHUMBERLAND SHLAA

Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment

Introduction

Planning Policy Statement 3: Housing (2006) requires Local Planning Authorities to carry out a Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) in order to identify future sources of land for housing.

The primary role of the SHLAA is to:

  • Identify sites with potential for housing
  • Assess their housing potential
  • Assess when they are likely to be developed

The SHLAA will form part of the evidence base, along with other information, to inform decisions in plan making including future allocations within Local Development Framework Documents.

Methodology

The Northumberland Local Planning Authorities have agreed to work to a common methodology to undertake the SHLAAs. This methodology can be viewed from the Northumberland Sub Regional SHLAA Draft Methodology link and reflects Government Guidance detailed in the SHLAA Practice Guide July 2007 and the North East England, Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment Regional Implementation Guide March 2008. These documents can be found under external links in the right hand column of this page.

Please note that the deadline date for comments on the Northumberland SHLAA draft methodology has now closed. Comments received on the draft methodology are currently being analysed.

Site Submissions

Please note that the deadline date for the submission of sites for inclusion within the SHLAA has now closed and an assessment has now commenced regarding the suitability of the sites included within the SHLAA.

The inclusion of a site within a SHLAA does not mean that a site has been allocated for residential development and does not guarantee planning permission. Each site will be assessed against the agreed methodology.

The following links are to the relevant local authority SHLAA web pages, where you can access the sites that have so far been registered as part of the SHLAA process:
