Sites and special projects policy
The local authority prepares local plans to address conservation and development issues and set out policies on these matters. Local plans provide the basis for making decisions on planning applications.

The Development Plan for the Borough will comprise the Regional Spatial Strategy and the Local Development Framework. The former produced by the North East Assembly and the latter by the Borough Council.
The Borough Council has commenced the production of the LDF and the timetable for doing so, as well as the detail of the documents to be produced, is set out in the Council’s Local Development Scheme.
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s website contains a section on Planning Policy Statements and companion guides which detail the process for the production of Local Development Frameworks. This can be viewed at
