Berwick Borough Council Fair Trade Resolution
Why Fair Trade?
Berwick Borough Council, as an important consumer and opinion leader, will research, develop and support a strategy to facilitate the promotion and purchase of foods with the FAIRTRADE Mark. This is as part of Berwick Borough Council’s commitment to Local Agenda 21, in pursuit of sustainable development and the principles of sustainability and to give marginalized producers a fair deal.
Aim
To be recognized by residents, visitors and the business community of Berwick upon Tweed, suppliers, employees and other local authorities and towns, as a North Northumberland town that supports and promotes Fairtrade and to increase the sale of products with the FAIRTRADE Mark.
Berwick Borough Council resolves to contribute to the local campaign to increase sales of products with the FAIRTRADE Mark, to achieve Fairtrade status for Berwick upon Tweed, as detailed within the Fairtrade Foundation’s Fairtrade Towns Initiative.
This initiative involves a commitment to;
- Widely offer FAIRTRADE Marked food and drink options internally and make them available for internal meetings
- Promote the FAIRTRADE Mark using Fairtrade Foundation materials in refreshment areas and promote the Fairtrade Initiative in internal communications and external newsletters
- Use influence to urge local retailers to provide Fairtrade options for residents
- Use influence to urge local businesses to offer Fairtrade options to their staff and promote the FAIRTRADE Mark internally
- In partnership with the Berwick Fair Trade Initiative Steering Group engage in a media campaign to publish the Fairtrade Towns Initiative
- Allocate a responsibility for progression of the Fairtrade Town Initiative to a member of staff
In partnership with the Berwick Fair Trade Initiative Steering Group organize events and publicity during national Fairtrade fortnight and the annual local Border Green Festival to promote sales of products with the FAIRTRADE Mark.
